From vinegar to baking soda to peroxide, we all have our little stain-removing secrets. If you are anxious to show off your stain-fighting powers to the world, here are some great tips and tricks of the trade for saving your clothes for another day:
• Berry stains – with the summer season steadily approaching, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries always seem to make it mostly to our mouths, and partly to our clothes. If you find yourself with a berry stain, it is important to act fast. Hold the piece of clothing very tightly over the sink (have a friend help you hold the clothing stretched out tightly). Have a kettle of boiling water prepared. If you don’t have a kettle, you can boil water in a pot – but since this takes 10 to 20 minutes, a kettle is preferred ( 2- 5 minutes for boiling water). Then pour the boiling water over the stain about 12 inches above the stain. Continue over and over again until the stain is removed.
• Grease – one of the most difficult to remove! If you find yourself with grease on a washable item, then try dabbing on some Crisco or butter, and then continue your laundry as usual. Or, if you find a fresh grease stain on an item, simply throw some talcum powder on it! Let it sit and dry and then brush off the excess powder. That should take care of fresh grease stains.
• Ink – you may forget to recap that ball-point pen or spill some printer ink while refilling an ink cartridge. Either way, you can try this nifty little trick: use some cheap hairspray that doesn’t contain any oil. Whether it is a T-shirt, your carpet or your kid’s outdoor jacket, this is sure to do the trick. Saturate the item with the hairspray and continue laundry as usual. If it is a carpet that has the stain, then saturate and let dry. The brush over the spot lightly with a towel soaked in vinegar and water. (The hidden secret in this trick is really the alcohol in the hairspray.)
